All You Need is Love…and Tacos

 In Author

February is known for an abundance of hearts and declarations of love. Love can be amazing and wonderful. It can also be terribly painful and heartbreaking. Love means being patient, forgiving, and slow to take offense. It means trying to see others’ point of view, not holding a grudge, and giving people time to change and grow. Loving others is the easiest and hardest thing we’ll ever do. But love matters, even if it’s hard. As The Beatles proclaimed in one of their many hits, “All You Need is Love.” Love might be all you need, but it’ll take everything you’ve got.

Speaking of The Beatles, I recently watched an odd, but thought-provoking movie entitled, Yesterday. It’s about a struggling singer/songwriter named Jack who’s ready to give up his dream. Jack’s only supporter is his best friend, Ellie. One day, there’s a mysterious global blackout and Jack gets hit by a bus. He wakes up to a world where he seems to be the only person who remembers The Beatles. Seizing the opportunity, Jack releases The Beatles songs as his own and becomes a megastar overnight. It’s not long before Jack realizes fame has taken everyone important to him, including Ellie who he finally figures out is the love of his life. In a grand gesture, he distributes all the songs for free and leaves his crazy rock star life to settle down with Ellie. All you need is love, right?

The Savior said “A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.” (John 13:34) Loving others is all about relationships, and navigating relationships is hard. Sometimes we can resolve our differences with others by investing lots of time and effort. It’s not always fun, but it can work. Other times, a problem arises that can’t be solved (at least for now), and we just have to let it go. (Devoted fans of Disney’s Frozen are way ahead of me.) If we’re striving to love one another, the answers will come.

Now about the tacos…Can tacos be a love language? I first remember eating tacos with my mom in the seventies. We used to visit a fast-food chain in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, called Taco Viva. Their tacos were served with varying degrees of heat including mild, enchilada, medium, extra hot, jalapeno, and El Scorcho. Mom always ordered El Scorcho tacos. Seriously. I don’t know how she ate them. I’m pretty much a medium hot taco person—just enough spice to get my attention is good. And it’s no secret that I love tacos—fish tacos, shrimp tacos, chicken tacos, pork tacos, vegi tacos—they’re all good. And I’m not the only one. Rumor has it that my brother went to all-you-can-eat Tuesday at Taco Time in Provo, Utah one night and devoured twenty-one tacos. Maybe it’s true, maybe it’s not.

So take some time to spread the love, make your heart happy, and eat a few tacos before February is over!
